Kapa Haka Rhythm game

My group's first semester project, a rhythm game designed to teach its players about the Māori tradition of Kapa Haka.

This is a sidescrolling 4-key rhythm game featuring two levels with different characters & backgrounds. Each level tells a simple story designed to educate the player on central aspects of the Kapa Haka tradition.

The most interesting part of the game is a layered music/feedback system, where performing well will gradually increase the amount of instruments playing, as well as trigger some animations.

This game was created by 6 students as our primary 1st semester project in medialogy. All group members had a hand in part of the production, including sprites, animations, sounds & code, so I do not have the rights to share the project files, but you can try the game on the download link at the top of the page.

We wanted to support interest in Kapa Haka for players, and did much research on the topic to create this game. Ultimately, what we featured is still just a small simplification of the complex cultural movement that is Haka, so I do apologise for anything we may have misrepresented.
